Remarkable News

F. Figueras

On wednesday 24th of October, Francesca Figueras, professor of the Quantum Physics and Astrophysics Department of the University of Barcelona and researcher of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences participated in the 9th chapter of the «Universo sostenible» series from TVE, devoted to the research area of the stars.

Last June, the series «Universo sostenible» starts through the program «La aventura del saber» from «La 2». «Universo sostenible» is a science dissemination series where university researchers talk about scientific main issues with social interest. The ninth chapter « Universo sostenible: żcuánto brillan las estrellas?», was devoted to astrophysics and the participants were: Francesca Figueras, professor and member of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB, IEEC-UB), and president of the Spanish Society of Astronomy (SEA); Ana Ulla, professor of the Applied Physics Department of the University of Vigo; Alicia Sintes, professor of Theoretical Physics and Principal Investigator in the LIGO scientific collaboration LIGO in the University of the Balearic Islands; Ute Lisenfeld, professor of the Theoretical and Cosmos Physics in the University of Granada, and Enric Pallé, member of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics of the University of La Laguna.

In the chapter, Figueras talks about Gaia catalogue which is being built from data obtained by the Gaia satellite in a five-year period. It will allow us to have access for the first time to a 3d map of the Milky Way. The professor states, «in 2018 Gaia has supplied the position of 1.400 million of stars; the challenge is processing 10^12 images, 100 TB of data compiled during the five years of the mission». All the Gaia data are processed in five centres, one of them is located in Barcelona: The Barcelona Supercomuting Center (BSC-CNS).

«Universo sostenible», an audiovisual project of the CRUE Spanish Universities
