MAGIC, HESS and VERITAS experiments have revolutionized the field of high energy gamma-ray astrophysics in recent years. While in 2003 barely half a dozen objects were known, more than 200 are currently known, which have allowed us to delve into the physics of galactic and extragalactic objects, as well as to study fundamental physics in the Universe. In this talk I will make a brief introduction about the mechanisms used to generate very high anergy gamma rays and the technique to detect them. I will then review the most interesting discoveries made by current experiments, from supernova remnants in binary systems, from super-massive black-hole jets to their multi-messenger connection through the detection of neutrinos. Finally, I will present Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new generation land-based astronomy observatory that is being built in La Palma and Paranal, and I will describe its key projects that will be carried out over the next decade.

Professor of the Department of Quantum Physics and Astrophysics of the UB, researcher of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB), scientific director of the Montsec Astronomical Observatory (OAdM) and member of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC).
