The comet C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) was discovered on August 17th 2014 by Terry Lovejoy

  • Origin on the Oort cloud
  • Stable orbit, highly inclined with respect to the ecliptic.
  • Revolution period of 8000 years.
  • Perigee (closest approach to Earth): 7 January, 70 million km from Earth (182 times the Earth-Moon distance).
  • Perihelion (closest approach to the Sun): 30 January 2015, 193 million km from the Sun (Earth orbits 150 million km).

Comet Lovejoy is still on the way to the perihelion of its orbit, which will take place on 30 January. Although at this time is moving away from Earth, it continues being an object visible to the naked eye (magnitude around 4) due its high activity.

Moving from state of hibernation to a frenetic activity due to increased solar radiation.
