Partial Lunar Eclipse on 16 August 2008

Back

The beginning of the night on 16 August will bring one of the most beautiful moments of the summer: the observation of a partial lunar eclipse almost at moonrise, which will coincide with sunset.

This sight will be visible from the whole Spain from before the beginning of partiality, and will be totaly visible from Eastern Europe, Western Asia and the Middle East. The next map summarizes the visibility of the event:

Despite the Moon will not be visible from Spain at the moment of the strict beginning of the eclipse: the first contact with the terrestrial penumbra (it marks the moment when the penumbral phase, which is usually difficult to notice, starts), our satellite will already be above the horizon when it first contact the shadow of the Earth and partiality phase starts.

InstantTime UT
Beginning of penumbral phase18:24:49
Beginning of partiality phase22:44:16
End of penumbral phase23:55:25

This way, at 21:36 spanish civil time (in summer 2 hours must be added to universal time) partiality phase will begin, and it will last until beyond midnight.

At the very central moment of this phase, at 23:10 spanish civil time, the maximum of the eclipse will happen, moment when just a thin band of the Moon will be outside the shadow of the Earth.
