A transit is the crossing of a planet or any celestial object in front of the Sun. Mercury and Venus are the only Solar System planets that can give transits, because they are closer to the Sun than the Earth. The Moon can also give transits, and in this case the phenomena is called a Solar eclipse.

During a transit the disk of the planet is seen projected on the bright surface of the Sun..

That way there are serials in the form 8 years, 121.5 years, 8 years, 105.5 years. The last transit happened on the 8th June 2004, .and it was visible from Catalonia. The next pair of transit will take place in the years 2117 and 2125.

The history of the Transits of Venus is the history of the Sun-Earth distance determination . A history where you find astronomers that traveled around the world to observe this phenomena. They tried to calculate the distance to the Sun as Halley proposed at the seventeenth century. Nowadays transits are one of a techniques to search planets outside the Solar System. When a planet crosses in front of its star it produces a small change in the star's brightness. This change must be periodic if it is caused by a planet. Analyzing this change in the light received from stars, the presence of an exoplanet can be deduced in some cases. The Kepler Mission from NASA use this technique to explore the structure and diversity of planetary systems.

Transits of Venus have a strange pattern of frequency. A transit will not have happened for about 121 Ż years (prior to 8th June 20042004, the last one was 1882). Then there will be a span of about 105 Ż years before the next pair of transits occur, again separated by eight years. Then the pattern repeats (121 Ż , 8, 105 Ż , 8).
