Forecasts talked about greatest magnituds of the order of 2, but the information available was not enough to be completely sure; there was some place for surprise... and it happened. As of today, the comet C/2006 P1 (McNaught) is visible to the naked eye from our latitude (Barcelona) at the moment of the sunset, very near the Sun.

In spite of that the comet has been visible since the first days of January, these are the best days to observe it, because it will pass its perihelion on the 13th. Its brightness will probably have increased still more by then, but nobody can know exactly how much. Anyway, it is quite likely that the comet arrives to be visible to the naked eye during the day over the following days. After this, the comet McNaught will go away quickly from the Sun and the Earth and will become invisible from our latitude (Barcelona).

On the other hand, the comet C/2006 P1 ( McNaught) will enter the field of view of the LASCO instrument of the spacecraft SOHO on 12th January, just a short while before reaching its greatest bright, and will remain visible until 16th. The images obtained during this period will be very interesting, because it is very likely that this comet will be the brightest one ever observed by the spacecraft.
